HARVEST FESTIVAL is coming soon!

Mark your calendars and start planning. This year's Harvest Festival is scheduled for Saturday October 22.

The Special Events Committee wants to hear from Grove School Winterim groups and clubs who are interested in running a booth or activity at the Harvest Festival.

If your winterim group, sports team or student organization needs money, this year's Harvest Festival is a great fundraising opportunity.

The deadline is approaching!

As the end of the academic year draws near, Gena is preparing the School’s Annual Report due to Redlands Unified School District by May 31^st. One part of that report is the Family Commitment Hours Log that verifies the hours served by our school community on behalf of our School. Remember your promise to the school to complete 30 hours of service annually. Family Commitment Hours are one of the requirements for our Charter, and if we fail to fulfill them, our Charter renewal is at risk. Your service helps us maintain day-to-day functionality, reach for our goals, and helps to fulfill your personal commitment to the success of our school.

Be sure to let us know if you see any inaccuracies by sending an email message to ptg@thegroveschool.org. There are still “0” hours listed for several families. Double check to be sure that we have not left your contribution off of our list, and if you have completed hours that are not recorded, let us know right away!

If you have not yet completed your hours, you may want to know that there are still a few school events that you can support. Contact Beth Hauso if you can assist with Graduation programs. Plan to attend the final PAC/PTG meeting of the school year scheduled for May 31^st at 7:00 pm. Volunteer to help at the Saturday morning Farmers’ Market. Offer your help to a teacher to clean up their classroom at the end of the year.

If you have exceeded your 30-hour minimum, please don’t stop reporting your time! The reality is that if there are families who fall short of their minimum commitment, your extra hours will help to make up the difference. We must demonstrate at least 30 hours per family overall. If you do not complete your hours, another family in our community is working them for you! So, don’t be left out. The hours you serve make a difference in the quality of our children’s’ education!

Registration starts on Monday May 2 and ends on Tuesday May 31. You can register in person between 8 am and 4 pm at The Grove School, 200 Nevada St., Redlands, CA 92373.

Only completed applications ( completed registration form, payment, and immunization records for non Grove students) will be accepted. You can either pay with check or cash (exact amount, no change). Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Refunds

Raven Summer Academy may cancel classes due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances with a full refund. Otherwise, no refunds will be given after classes start.

Attendance Policy

Summer school instruction is compressed into an extremely short time frame. For this reason attendance is strictly observed. In order to satisfy class requirements, students must be present and on time each day.

Students who are not present the first day of class will be automatically dropped.

Teachers will count students tardy at the beginning of each period.

Each tardy is equivalent to one (1) absence.

Illness and medical appointments also count as absences.

Students with more than two absences during the summer session will be dropped regardless of the reason.

Soccer Camp

I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting our very own soccer camp at the Grove School!!!!! The soccer camp will commence on on the 6th of June and will run until the 10th (M-F). We aim to make this camp a fun, and rewarding soccer experience for all involved. Whether you are a beginner, or a serious competitve player, this camp will have something to offer you! We will cover several soccer drills and have fun along the way. This camp is open for all students, farm and high school. REMEMBER – Student Hours should not be reported to PTG, but parent Attendance at school events like Back to School BBQ, College prep nights, Coffee Houses, PTG meetings and Valentine’s Dance all contribute to our community and count towards FCH.

Each family is expected to contribute 30 hours of service on behalf of the school. Any member of your family can help fulfill this obligation (except our own Grove students, who have their own requirement that should be reported to their mentor.) Only two months left in the school year, in order to complete your family's hours. The 30 Hour requirement can be achieved by working for the school in many ways, assisting with FFA and 4-H, driving on field trips, all school work days, chaperoning school events, or providing other service.

IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED HOURS THAT ARE NOT RECORDED PLEASE SUBMIT WHATEVER YOU HAVE FINISHED TO DATE NOW! You can add any hours worked between now and the end of the schoolyear at the end of May.

1. Submit your hours by completing a hard copy of the FCH Form. You can download the form from this blog page. Look on the right hand margin in the Service Forms box, and click where it says Family Service.

2. Or, you can submit your hours via email, by sending a message to ptg@thegroveschool.org. Include the following information: Family Name, Student Name(s) and Grade, Date, # Hours, Activity/Task.

If you are short hours, you have just six weeks left in this school year in order to fulfill them... but don’t despair, just come join us! - We still have upcoming events and opportunities. Any member of your family can contribute hours on behalf of the family’s commitment. Parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, siblings can all help out

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REVIEW TEAM meets on Wednesday, March 30. If you receive an invitation to attend a review for your child, please respond ASAP. There will be two opportunities for parents and students to attend these meetings which are mandatory. Please know that Grove is experiencing an unprecedented dip in attendance and that a 95% attendance rate is required for our charter to be renewed.

THE FARMERS' MARKET AT THE GROVE SCHOOL
Do you know that our school hosts a really wonderful farmers' market? Come get fabulous local produce: fresher than from any store, delicious and healthy! Also get your rustic bread, free range eggs, beef jerky, sweet potato pie, student made craft items and more! Enjoy the laid back community atmosphere and a chance to see friends and school mates while shopping and munching. The food booth features a different guest chef each week, cooking hot breakfast. College: Making It Happen – March 10, 2011 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Lower Commons AT CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO

Parents of middle school students are invited to a program that will provide information about all aspects of college. Representatives from the California State University, University of California, private universities and community colleges will be available to provide information about their institutions of higher learning. Financial aid will also be discussed. This event is held in English as well as Spanish.

Current 10th and 11th graders are welcome to apply for the week-long conference in Sacramento from July 23-30, 2011. The students accepted attend the conference at no cost for themselves.

PAC/PTG - Regular Monthly meeting of the Parent Advisory Committee/Parent Teacher Group is Tuesday March 1, 7:00 - 9:00 pm, at the High School campus.

ASUW WOMEN IN SCIENCE DAY paperwork is due for 8th grade girls who will be attending the conference on MONDAY. CONGRATULATIONS to the 8th grade girls who were selected to attend.

SENIORS - Baccalaureate Auditions Friday, March 4 at REVHS. The theme for this year is “Building Understanding Through Compassion.”
Speeches should be approximately three minutes long.
See Gena if you have questions or need details.

WINTERIM WEEK – Please know that students have worked hard to put together a week of alternative curriculum that will support our students as they explore the world with the goal of becoming independent adults. Please help them by responding to their requests for drivers and for being aware of their altered schedules.

ATHLETICS - Congratulations to the Grove Ravens who played valiantly against CATE on Friday and held the line for the first 25 non-scoring minutes of this game. We lost to a team that has two of its players signed to Manchester next year. This was a great season and our hats go off to our coach, Liam and to the parents who supported, drove, and never stopped believing in our soccer Ravens.
Grove Softball started two weeks ago in case anyone who wants to root for the Ravens wants to root, root, root for the home team. Stay tuned for game schedules.

SEVENTH GRADE WRITING EXAM – Please make sure your seventh graders are well fed, well slept and ready to write. This is a fun exam where students get to be creative and let their talent shine. Each spring students in grade 7 participate in the California Standards Tests (CSTs) complete a writing task as part of the CST for English-Language Arts. This writing task is known as the California Writing Standards Test or the CST/CMA for writing.

FINALS on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week (February 23-25). These are half days for students who need only attend during the time of their tests or seminars. Schedules will be posted on Monday. Make-ups are available in the afternoons of exam days but all tests need to be completed by 3:00 Friday.

ASUW WOMEN IN SCIENCE DAY - paperwork is due for 8th grade girls who will be attending the conference. Please get your packets in to Mamie ASAP.

Soccer Tournament Game on Wednesday afternoon. This will be another local game at the AYSO fields against the Milken Community School. Go RAVENS!!!

SENIORS - Baccalaureate Auditions Friday, March 4 at REVHS. The theme for this year is “Building Understanding Through Compassion.” Speeches should be approximately three minutes long. See Gena if you have questions or need details.

Shakespeare rehearsals continue this week on Tuesday (2/22) Scenes 3.2 and 3.3 and Thursday (2/24) scenes 3.4 and 3.5. Please come to rehearsal ONLY if your scene is being rehearsed. Rehearsals end promptly at 5:00, please plan transportation accordingly.

Montessori Refresher Course

A Successful Montessori Refresher Course was attended by Grove Faculty. This weekend Farm and High School teachers spent their week-end attending lectures, responding to questions and engaging in small group workshops in order to gain a better understanding of Montessori theory and best practices. Our visitors prior and after the refresher course included educators from Sweden, Cleveland, Canada, Minneapolis, Portland, and China. We have gained a lot of new insights and renewed our commitment to providing authentic Montessori education for our adolescents.

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony for eligible 11th and 12th grade students will be held on Tuesday at 6:00 pm. Parents and students of all new inductees should plan to attend (if you are eligible you should have received an invitation to join this prestigious group. of high achieving students in the mail.) Light refreshments will be served and a group photo taken for the yearbook. Current NHS members, and their parents, are also welcome to attend. See Anke Pilz for details.

Montessori and Redlands and The Grove School are co-hosting JOURNEY and DISCOVERY on Saturday, February 26th at 8:00. If you haven’t had a chance to partake of this parent education event, this is your opportunity to gain a better understanding of your student’s Montessori experience. You may use this experience toward your parent commitment hours. The event begins at 8:00 and culminates in a lunch time discussion about the different stages of our students’ development. Happy New Year from the PAC, Parent Advisory Committee! I hope you had a restful holiday, and that everyone is back from the winter break ready for an extraordinary new year.

I am writing with a brief update as to the activities and goals of PAC so far this year. We’ve been busy! You should know that thanks to the hard work of our Fundraising Committee, our SCRIP sales are generating a record level of profit for the school and our Annual Giving Campaign is doing better than ever before. Every penny raised by PTG goes back to the school to support teachers and students in activities both in the classroom and in the real world. So far this year, PTG has provided books and audio-visual equipment to our classrooms for instruction in Art, English, Mathematics, and Humanities. Tools for the woodshop. Financial support for field trips. Support for guest speakers at Parent Education nights. Support for Music and Athletics.

This year, our newly formed Special Events Committee, under the leadership of Sandi Harshman, has organized many successful events including the Back to School Barbeque, Harvest Festival, pancake breakfasts and more, to bring Grove families together in social settings and to support our students’ entrepreneurial efforts to raise funds for Winterim trips and school projects.

We’ve streamlined the process by which families submit their Family Commitment Hours, and are receiving and recording the many hours that families and friends of our students work to improve our campus facility and support our programs. Last Saturday we had a very productive Work Day on both campuses. Work on the Farm campus continues with removal of the old animal pens and date boxes to clear space for the Barton School House project, and the tremendously time consuming job of keeping the market garden growing strong.

Our STAR and SOAR committees, led by Andrea Morics and Geoff Bonney are critical to the success of our arts and athletics programs, working hard to support and expand the opportunities available for our students. Look for a STAR fundraiser later this month, and a SOAR fun-raising event in March!

Hard working parents like you lead every one of these committees! If you are interested in joining us and contributing your skills, time and ideas to our efforts, please do contact us. Any member of the Parent Advisory Committee of the Parent Teacher Group can be reached by sending an email to ptg@thegroveschool.org.

MANY THANKS!!! Gratitude to everyone who came out to help for ALL SCHOOL WORK DAY this week-end. Especially the Claflins (new white boards), Marcel (Max Machler’s dad) whose truck transported these enormous puppies, Dana Hawley-Zechlin who led the street cleaning and the Harris-Leshes who weatherproofed our leaky doors and stayed til late afternoon when the job was done! Parent hours are due in May. Please remember to hand them in (we get audited on these and every hour counts)!!

FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP 1-19 for Seniors and their parents! Take advantage of this amazing opportunity to complete (or even to start) your financial aid applications. FARM STORE PROGRESS - Many Thanks to Chuck Harrison (aka Heather’s dad) and his crew who have been working diligently to prepare our farm store cold room. We now have running water and refrigeration and are well on our way to reopening soon.

"Times have changed, and science has made great progress, and so has our work; but our principles have only been confirmed, and along with them our conviction that mankind can hope for a solution to its problems, among which the most urgent are those of peace and unity, only by turning its attention and energies to the discovery of the child and to the development of the great potentialities of the human personality in the course of its formation." (From the foreword to "The Discovery of the Child", Maria Montessori, 1948)

It would seem our work this year is already cut out for us, from the sublime to, well…the humble. We have a lot to look after and a lot to celebrate at Grove this coming year.

Thanks to the many families who have worked hard to create and maintain our Grove community, our students have a rosy new year to look forward to. Regardless of the challenges ahead, our school is doing well and our Grove families have every reason to be proud and optimistic about their students.

First of all, we have made steady, if not obvious, progress on our facilities. The Barton School House has been firmly secured to its foundation. All of its lead paint has been safely removed and disposed of and it is now ready for further renovation. We have just been made aware of a donation that will go toward the roofing of the building. All of this has been made possible through community donations from school and local donors. These include The Redlands Historical Association, The Cibelli Family, The Callison Family, The Phillips Family, The Redlands Conservancy and countless others who have attended fund raisers and done backbreaking work at a series of work days. We are still awaiting word on state funding, but it is good to know we can make steady progress through our own local efforts.

As mentioned in a recent Daily Facts article, the Grove students have once again proven their academic abilities through state testing. As the only secondary school in the district to achieve the state’s goal of 800 on standardized testing (Grove came in with a school score of 828 this year), we are leaders in achieving educational standards set out by the state. What’s more, the Grove students have a record number of students this year taking PSAT, SAT and ACT tests and applying to four year universities nationally and internationally. We also have a record number of students participating in AP classes, which are nationally recognized as college level courses and confer weighted college credit to the hardworking students who apply themselves at this level.

The farm has successfully provided a certified market as a base for our students’ entrepreneurial leadership. The market operates every Saturday, rain or shine, and has attracted many other farmers, making our farm a hub of fresh and local nutrition for Redlands. The SLOW FOODS movement (an international organization, recognizing nutrition through local farming and home cooking) has recognized Grove and has established a relationship with our school. Mamie Powell has reestablished our FFA program which is at the forefront of University of California’s Career Technical movement. The 4-H and FFA students at Grove are using local resources and land- based learning to help them to accomplish their short and long term goals while providing meaningful service to our community.

Grove’s Arts and Athletics programs are having a great year. With the recently established relationship with Footlighters Theater, Grove pulled off another highly successful fall play when the students presented American Idle, Murdering the Music last month. Beth Elliot and the drama team are looking forward to continued access to stage, sound and lighting thanks to the Footlighters Theater Group. And, if you haven’t had a chance to see the Ravens play soccer this year, try to make it to one of the remaining games this season. Our undefeated team has demonstrated that hard work, diligence and heart pay off on the field.

We have weathered the storms and hopefully spent some quality time with those nearest and dearest to us. The only storm facility problem is in Connie’s business office at the farm, where the roof could not stand up to the downpour. Please be patient while we work to restore that office to functionality.

The Grove’s Farmers’ Market continues every Saturday, from 8:00 – 12:00. Please buy scrip for your groceries but set aside some cash to use on Saturdays at the farm where the produce is freshest and grown without chemicals or pesticides by our own teenagers for your healthy family.

ALL SCHOOL WORK DAY – It’s not on the calendar, but we could sure use your help next Saturday, January 9 – If you have a truck for hauling or any roofing expertise please report to the farm. Don’t worry, there is something for everyone!!!We also have a need for white board installers, and electrical trench diggers. See you from 9:00 – 1:00.

Free Disaster Training. Certified Emergency Response Training (CERT) will be offered free to parents, teachers and staff, and students who are at least age 18, in a 16-hour workshop to be held on campus on four Saturdays in 2011: January 15 and 29, and February 5 and 12. The workshop, facilitated by Redlands Fire Department emergency response trainers, is open to all Montessori and Redlands and Grove parents, staff and adult family members. Beyond standard First Aid and CPR training, CERT gives a more advance level course of preparation for anyone in the community to boost their level of self-sufficiency after a major disaster. Prior first aid training is not required. The course covers disaster preparedness, disaster medical including setting up triage, fire suppression, and light search and rescue. CERT is being coordinated for us through Fault Line earthquake survival consulting, owned by Montessori parent Pamela Henry. If you are already CERT-trained, please contact her at callfaultline@gmail.com as she is coordinating a joint plan between Grove and Montessori. The more people we get signed up for this, the better (and safer) we will be.

Seasons Greetings!

I am just home from our final farmer’s market of the year where we hosted several other local farmers and gave high school and farm students a chance to interact with the public, selling their wares and sharing stories about our school and our community. My knee is slightly bruised after yesterday’s skating party where our children enthusiastically engaged in a very old-fashioned winter pastime. Many of our alumni were there, just home from college for winter break. It was heartening and inspiring to watch the first-time skaters who got out on the ice and “worked toward perfection” dusting the snow off their jeans and getting back up every time they fell. Earlier in the week I got the treat of watching our musical students perform beautifully at the Holiday Sing. This event at the University of Redlands took place only an hour after several of the artists competed on the soccer field, where they remain undefeated.

At the end of the year I look back and see that we are accomplishing our goals as a school, as parents and as a community. The vast majority of our adolescents are progressing academically and socially. Our students continue to meet or exceed the state’s academic goals, our families are participating in amazing numbers in programs like SCRIP and booster programs like SOAR and STAR and our school is recognized throughout the community for our service to others, our arts program and our farm. College representatives are coming to recruit our students to prestigious programs across the state. This makes challenges, like finding funding for schoolhouses, kitchens and field trips a bit easier to face.

So, inspired by the young teens on the ice, we can push off from the walls we are clinging to and smile at the chance to do something hard, optimistic and secure in the love of our families and friends. Have a happy, safe and peaceful holiday with those you love.

American Idol, Murdering the Music opens for two nights only this week (Friday December 10 and Saturday December 11) in the comfort of the Footlighter's Theater on Barton Road. Come and see our students perform in this hilarious and light hearted comedy. Tickets available at the farm or from your nearest drama student.

Your student scrip and fundraising rebates are coming this week. Ask your student for the email they will receive later this week. In it there will be an overview of rebates earned though fundraising events, Raven Rally and Scrip. If you would like PAC/PTG to transfer that money towards your students Winterim, sports or other school related activities, than make sure you print out the form included in the email that will allow you to allocate your student funds. Bring the form back to school and drop it in the PTG mailbox on either campus and we will make sure your funds will be transferred. Giving Thanks!

We have much to celebrate this year! Our students are doing better than ever academically; they are talented artists, reveling in their own creativity in drama, music and visual arts. They are, form the most part, healthy and athletic, out team is on the field today playing soccer and we will begin a basketball workshop next week. They are recognized as community leaders for their service, their dedication to environmental projects and their citizenship. They are responsible, caring and motivated. Our community has grown and flourished, with a strong commitment from invested parents and hard working educators.

This brings me to my gratitude statements: Thank you for all you do. The families of Grove are what make our community strong, vibrant and an important asset to the next generation. I don’t often get the chance to say how grateful I am to all of you for your hard work and dedication, whether you are buying and selling scrip, setting up the coffee house, posting the newsletter, painting the classrooms, or planning the next fundraiser – it is your hard work and dedication that makes our school excel.

SOAR STAR MEETING – Tuesday Night 6:00 STAR, 7:00 SOAR – All athletes and artists and athletic artists/artistic athletes (and their parents) are welcome to attend this meeting of committed boosters who are essential to the success of these programs.

THANKSGIVING BREAK – No School November 22-26. New term starts Nov. 29th

VETERAN’S DAY HOORAY- Thanks to all of you who helped us mark Veteran’s day by listening to veterans share their stories. Parents, grandparents and vets from several eras came and spoke to students. Mamie and her crew made a delicious lunch and Beth Hauso provided cake and hospitality. The veterans have already sent e-mails of gratitude to our students and our school for honoring them in this simple but authentic way.

FINAL EXAMS are on November 17, 18 and 19^thExams will be held between 8am and 12:45 pm. Please plan to send your student to school breakfasted and rested with a lunch or snack to eat. Classrooms will be open and teachers will be available by appointment after tests. Students may leave upon completion of exams. See posted farm and high school exam schedules for details.

COFFEE HOUSE -Cast off your finals week worries at Friday Night’s Coffee House. This is an unrehearsed open-mic night for students to share their talent with each other. Sign ups in Beth Elliott’s classroom at the farm. Tess’s Coffee Shop has graciously offered to provide us with an appropriate venue. Time and details later this week.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDY NIGHT -The High School ASB is offering an AFTER SCHOOL STUDY EVENING on Monday and Tuesday at the High School from 3:00-7:00. Snacks will be available (at cost) for students who stay. Students will form study groups to review for finals.

SPORTS SIGN UPS -Soccer Practice Starts MONDAY. Baseball and Softball sign ups are happening right now and will determine whether or not we field teams in Spring.

Please sign up for Basketball Workshop - After school basketball clinic for grades 7-12 with professional basketball coach will be offered if interest is shown. Athletic credit (5) conferred with regular attendance. Come and work on skills, get fit and get credit.

You are invited to come out and celebrate the fall season with our students and their friends. The students and their group leaders have been preparing family oriented games and activities for everybody in our community. There will be opportunity drawings, a cake walk, petting zoo, pumpkins, delicious BBQ, a drama presentation and more. All proceeds go to student groups.

Plan to bring your friends and families on Saturday from 11:00am – 3:00pm.

FARM DANCE FRIDAY October 22nd – The Farm Students’ Pumpkin Dance will be held at the Farm This Friday for 7-9^th graders so get your costumes put together and get ready to boogie (do people still say boogie?). Tickets are on sale for $7 at lunches this week.

PARENT ED NIGHT Thursday: Steven Hughes, Neuropsychologist and Montessori Dad will be here to speak to our Grove and MIR families on October 21 at 7pm at Montessori in Redlands. Attention Parents - We need your help on October 23 for the Harvest Festival being held at the Farm Campus. There are several areas we need your help: Ticket Sales-booths will take tickets only so all money will be handled at this booth; Prize Booth-game players will receive stamps on a card for each win at a booth, players collect stamps and redeem at prize booth; Floaters-these volunteers will 'float' between booths to make sure they are doing ok, answer questions, help if needed etc. Times are

School Lunch update – Grove will continue to provide frozen lunches for students as we work toward meeting the county’s new guidelines for commercial kitchens. We are looking forward to reinstating our wonderful field to table lunch program as soon as possible. Sophomores and Juniors will take this national exam that helps them qualify for a variety of scholarships and puts them on the radar of various colleges and universities. Please come prepared with a good night’s rest, a calculator, a hearty breakfast and #2 pencils. Grove pays for your tests as a way to make sure everyone take one, but they cost the school $13 for each student. Your cash or check to (made out to Grove) for $13 would be greatly appreciated, but come to take the test no matter what! We will have mentor meetings after the test and mini-courses in the afternoon.

WEDNESDAY October 13 – Psst.. Seniors, while the lil’uns are testing, we will be online, applying for colleges and scholarships – so get here with all of your necessary info (social security number, mother’s maiden name, etc) and be ready to go online and take care of business.

The Redlands Conservancy in conjunction with Trails-4-All is hosting the 4th annual Redlands version of the Santa Ana River Cleanup Day. Our Thanks to one and all who came out and helped with All School Work Day and the Farmer’s Market on Saturday. The farm looks great and the high school students will be grateful for new, easy to read white boards.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT UNDERWAY - In case you were wondering…Joe Danesweski and his crew of community service volunteers were busy in the top gardens implementing a sustainable irrigation plan on Saturday. This will be Joe’s Eagle Scout Project and his crew of red shirted wonders are making our gardens grow so that the whole community can benefit from locally grown produce.

CAHSEE MAKE UP TEST TUESDAY(English Language Arts) and WEDNESDAY(Math) for all 11^th and 12^th graders who have yet to complete this test. Please help your student get plenty of rest and a good breakfast before the test.

SEND YOUR STUDENT TO SCHOOL DAY October 6th is CBEDS day. CBEDS is the day that we report our attendance to the county to determine our funding for the rest of the year. (The state goes back and fixes any discrepancies in 18 months or so, but it’s a dry season ‘til then if we don’t have good attendance on October 6th). In other words, this is one of the most important days to send your student to school in order to keep Grove funded for the rest of the year. Please make sure your student gets to school on October 6th. Thanks!

FUNDING YOUR CHILD’S COLLEGE EDUCATION WORKSHOP Thursday at 5 pm. All parents (grades 7-12) are welcome to come hear our college finance speaker and talk about strategies for affording the dream.

SIGN UP FOR THIS YEAR’S BASKETBALL and SOCCER TEAMs NOW! Looks like we will be having a co-ed 9-12 soccer and basketball team with lot’s of fun, competition and exercise for all. This is a great way to get PE credit. Please get your athletic packets in this week.

GRATITUDE

Thanks to all who came to our annual Governing Board Retreat on Saturday and special thanks to Margie Armantrout for feeding us breakfast AND lunch!

The Redlands Conservancy fund raiser was a big success on Saturday and our Grove High and Farm students did a great job of promoting The Barton School House Project to the greater Redlands community. Thanks for your help.

FIELD TRIP OFFERS OPPORTUNITY TO BOND WITH TEENS The High School still needs drivers for Julian Wolf Field Trip on Oct. 6th. UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

September 21th is our International Day of Peace celebrated by Montessori Schools around the world. This day gives us a chance to reflect on Montessori’s mission for our young people, which was and is to promote adolescents as peace agents who will go forward and make our world a place where dignity and human heartedness rule. The students are planning a joint lunch-time event with MIR, creating “pinwheels for peace” and reflecting on ways to be better peace builders in their homes, school and world. All School Work Day!

Saturday’s all school work day was incredibly well attended. Lots of great energy and hard workers. Old families and many new families. Weather was cool (hurray!) and everyone worked hard to clear up and clean up the campus in preparation for school to start on Monday. Tons of work got done! There were snacks, fun and a great feeling of camaraderie and accomplishment. 50 people came to work just at the Farm! including kids, parents, grandparents, siblings and friends! - families represented included: Watson, Duggin, Claflin, Thornton, Montgomery, Harold, Hogeweg/de Jong, Harrison, Andonyadis/Korf, Zook, Brown, Northrop, Ivanenko, Baty, McGuire, Burton, Labardee, Legarrea, Israel, Curbeld, Larson, Longman, Buckley, Keidel, Erlandson, Downs, Syme. There were lots of people at the High School also.

Jobs accomplished at the Farm campus included: painting classrooms, trimming hedges, installing new shelving, installing new blinds on windows, weeding vegetable garden, cleaning up boots area under chinaberry tree, tearing down and removing old animal pens, cleaning up shade/lunch area, cleaning up laundry room, cleaning out farm store, repairing furniture, cleaning goat pens and chicken areas, eating snacks, getting to know new friends and re connecting with old friends...
Many many thanks to all who came and volunteered their time. We made a huge difference! The teachers were so grateful.

Our next all school work day is on Saturday September 11, from 9am to 1pm. See you then!!

We understand that there were more than a few inaccurate schedules handed out last night. we will work through and input the correct schedules ASAP. It looks like some of the schedule data has been entered on an old version of the master school schedule. We have worked out a new plan for data entry, with everything funneling through Anke Pilz. Dear Parents, Students, Supporters and Teachers,

Thanks to almost all of you for coming out for our annual back to school night. Although we were meeting in hot cramped conditions, it was wonderful to see everyone. PTG parents (including STAR and SOAR) put on quite a welcome as they staffed tables and handed out essential info for the coming year. PTG/ PAC are reporting an incredible amount of participation in annual giving, scrip and voluntarism. The students did a lot of prep work and we are grateful to 4-H, ASB and FFA for their leadership. Also thanks to the teachers who had participated in an in-service all day and then stood and scooped ice cream so we could all cool off!

The energy on both sides of the campus is great this year and we are all looking forward to a great year.

At 6:30 farm families will walk over to the high school campus to meet up with the rest of the Grove families and faculty for the ice-cream social.

As I write, there are crews here at school painting the outside of the high school building, the insides of the farm classrooms and generally getting ready for the big day on the 30^th when we open our doors to the students. There are a few events and things to remember as you and your families prepare for back to school.

SCHOOL CAMP OUTS

The farm and high school will be camping again this year during our first week of school. The high school group will be traveling to Silverwood Lake from 9/1 – 9/3 and the farm students will be camping at the farm on 9/2-9/3. Students will be ready to go home at noon on Friday, August 3 at noon (we will NOT be providing lunch.) Attendance at the camp out is mandatory for all students as this in an integral community building activity and is essential to building relationships with mentors and mentor groups and building the community awareness that helps with our group academic work. Bring your permission slip and the fee to school on Monday August 30th. Students who are eligible for free and reduced lunches have fees waived or reduced for this and all other field trips.

Dear Cal Trans District 8,

I am writing in support of a Safe Routes to School Cycle 9 grant for the City of Redlands to provide curbs, gutters and removal of overhead wires on Orange Avenue between Iowa and Nevada Streets. This would enable the 520 students who attend The Grove School and Montessori in Redlands to get to and from school without endangering themselves. It would also facilitate students who walk to the Redlands Unified School District bus stops on Orange Ave. to get to their busses safely (there has already been one pedestrian/car accident on the corner of Orange and Iowa). Also needed are crosswalks on Orange Street at Iowa and Nevada Streets to help students and other pedestrians to cross safely.

At this time, students walk, bike or are pushed in strollers on the often mud filled verge of the road where increasing numbers of motorists drive at more than urban speeds. Curbs, sidewalks and gutters are essential for the children’s safety in light of recent development of high density housing in this area. The inclusion of safe walkways would also increase connectivity between shopping areas, healthcare centers and bus routes on Barton and Redlands Boulevards.

As the principal of The Grove School, student safety is my highest priority. Please consider our children’s safety when allocating funding to this worthy cause.

Please park on the street near the corner of Highland Avenue and Cajon Streets. A courtesy shuttle will runs graduation guests from the intersection of Highland and Cajon to the theater from 6:30-7:30 pm & 8:30-9:30 pm. There will be no parking inside Prospect Park.

A dessert reception for all guests will be held immediately following the ceremony.

Many of you heard of the loss of Beth Easterling last week. Thank you all for your kindness, patience, good wishes/prayers for me and my family and for Beth and her family. Beth (Ortolan) Easterling will be missed by many and the world will be less bright without her. She was one of the people who made The Grove School work and without her, Grove wouldn’t be here today. She understood the vision and worked hard on the mission and volunteered countless hours to make Grove a reality. Her memorial service in Redlands is tentatively set for June 24^th and I am sure that her children, Robert and Gina, would love to see many of you there.

WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS

All unclaimed “lost and found” items will be sent to family services early in the week.
There is no lunch provided for Grove Students (farm or high school) during finals week.
Half Day Schedule for Finals this week (noon dismissal). Students were given individual schedules last week at school. Students will be in a classroom for the duration of the final period (no “leave when you are done” privileges.) Bring reading material or to study for the next test if you finish early. (It is too distracting to have one’s friends walking past the window when one is trying to remember an author’s name or solve for x). Thursday will be a good day to get yearbooks signed and say goodbye for the summer.
No final transcripts, semester grades or graduation paperwork (diplomas) will be given to any student or graduate with outstanding fees, books, senior project presentations, materials or uniforms that belong to the school. This applies to several graduates and many underclassmen. Students will not matriculate to the next class without completion of community service, internship or other prerequisites for continued enrollment. Please review your student handbooks and then call the office if you have questions.
Unless students have a meaningful purpose they should be off campus in the afternoon this week. No students are to be “at the farm” visiting after hours. If students need supervision, they will be sent to the main office to phone an adult family member.
Thanks to those of you who helped on Saturday with the ALL SCHOOL WORK DAY. Your energy and effort really makes a difference. Parent commitment hours will be published this week so please get them in ASAP. A preliminary list has already been forwarded to the school district.
Thursday’s graduation ceremony is well in hand with Beth Hauso, Sandi Harshman and the alumna team leading the way. Commencement commences at 7:30 at the Seewell Theater at Prospect Park. Volunteers needed!! If you are interested in participating in the set up or clean up, check with Beth in the main office at 798-7831, or bhauso@thegroveschool.org.
Friday is an in-service day with meetings scheduled at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm. Teachers will be available by appointment only.
The high school is being sublet for several weeks this summer and the farm is closed so there are no visiting options for incoming students. The office will be OPEN (phones on and meetings by appointment) from 8:00-1:00. The farm buildings and grounds are closed.

Baccalaureate practice is on monday for our speaker and candle lighter @ 3:30 at the bowl.

Tuesday June 1st at 6pm will be the last PAC/PTG meeting of the school year. Come join us and help us decide on a new membership slate for the 2010-2011 school year.

Wednesday, June 2 is the Bridging ceremony. Come and watch the 9th graders cross over and then join us for lunch and community building games and activities, hosted by the ASB. NHS will be selling Root Beer Floats in case you run around and need refreshment. Proceeds go to buy honor chords and pins for grads.

Friday June 4th is the all school beach trip. If you haven't handed in your permission slip, it's not too late!! Remember to bring a lunch and sunscreen.

This week at The Grove School

Many thanks go out to all of you who took part in this week-end’s Renaissance Arts festivities. Beth and Joan have spent weeks with their students setting this up. We started the week-end with the first rendition of Twelfth Night (“thing two”) excellently presented by the first cast (are all of these numerical references confusing anyone yet?) On Saturday morning Kammy and her crew were at school bright and early setting up for the visual arts show which took place in conjunction with the Renn Faire.

The day was gorgeous, cool and breezy. The students set up a variety of games and there were demonstration of fencing, archery, chivalry and renaissance dance. Mamie and her helpers did a great job of feeding everybody with fresh food from the garden. Everyone enjoyed the petting zoo, and costumes were available for those who wanted to get their photos professionally done by Colleen Bonney. The curtain went up on the second rendition of Twelfth Night at 7:30. The second cast, made up primarily of older students, had a great time. The students ended the evening, dancing on the stage in Renaissance Costumes. Many thanks go out to Mr. Callison who re-wired the farm to make lighting the stage safer and more efficient and to Nephelie Andonyadis and Julie Nichols for their help in setting things up. The entire farm community worked very hard to make this a success.

First of all, thanks to all Grove students for preparing and presenting student-led conferences on Thursday and Friday. Students owe thanks to their parents who took time out of their busy schedules to participate. The school is especially grateful to the many community members who also attended conferences and gave their thoughtful feed-back to the students.

This week-end saw another round of work and talent from the Grove Community…

We began on Saturday morning with the Barton Schoolhouse workday where more than 20 students, parents and community members came out to prep the schoolhouse for renovations.

Thanks to all of you who are working to make this dream a reality, one nail at a time.

Saturday afternoon and evening was a flurry of preparation for the 2010 PROM. It was, from all reports, an elegant evening of fine dining and dancing at the Redlands Country Club. Thanks to all of the chaperons and planners… parents, students and staff who spent months preparing for this event so that our students could have a memorable gala in their high school careers.

Many of us who did not attend the prom got to experience a different sort of creative event…the 2010 Great Y Circus of Dreams which features nearly two dozen Grove and MIR performers. This year’s circus is amazing and if you haven’t had a chance to see our talented students the show runs at the Redlands YMCA through the 23^rd.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

High School Students have their Final Praxis Paper due this week. They have been asked to ponder and write about the question, “What is Knowledge.” Papers are due on Friday (no late papers accepted for credit) and project presentations are next Thursday, May 27^th.
The Grove School will proudly present Twelfth Night on Friday and Saturday evening May 21 and 22^nd. The play is performed in conjunction with The Renaissance Faire and the Grove Shakespeare Festival Art Show which will be held on Saturday May 22nd; from 4pm to 6:30 pm. (Parents and students who still need volunteer hours are cordially invited to contact Joan Murphy or Beth Elliot at: ptgfarm@thegroveschool.org or echo-7@earthlink.net. Please note that there are minimum academic requirements (minimum GPA: 2.5) for all students participating in the performance.
Field trip forms go out this week for the May 26^th Field Trip (High School mentor groups have a final chance to bond and have fun together and Farm Students have their final study-trip).
May 27^th is the Awards Banquet for Grove’s Artists, Thespians and Actors so save the date. Letters are awarded at this time and there will be an induction ceremony for the Grove Thespian Society. This week we have a lot to look forward to, including MONDAY'S COLLEGE READINESS meeting for parents. This is a great opportunity to get your questions about going to college answered by University admissions professionals, financial aid specialists and other parents who have recently been through this hair raising process. Please come to school on Monday night, May 10 at 7pm (your attendance counts as volunteer hours). See you there.
The last AP test on Environmental Science is scheduled for 8am on Tuesday.
The Grove School Governing Board meets on May 11 at 6:30 pm.
Student led conferences are this week on the 13 and 14th (Thursday and Friday). Please call the school and sign up for a conference if you have not signed up yet. Conferences are a mandatory part of each semester's student work. Students are welcome to come to school, work on projects or other work or sit in as "peers" on other student's conferences. No regular classes will be held during conferences. Parents, grandparents and board members are encouraged and invited to volunteer to observe conferences and senior project presentations for students other than their own. Service hours are available for students and parents who participate
Shakespeare play practice continue to be held at the Farm, Tuesday and Thursday after school. "12th Night" and the Renaissance Faire on Friday and Saturday the 21 and 22 of May.
Girls softball concludes this week. Our last home game is Tuesday at 3:30 at Orangewood. Come and cheer for our girls.
Prom will be on Saturday May 15th at the Redlands Country Club. Dinner and dance with as theme "Night at the Coliseum". Prom tickets are on sale now at the High School for this week's prom. $50.00 single tickets, $80.00 for a couple. Tickets will not be sold at the door, so buy them NOW!!

Miranda organized and executed an amazing event Thursday, the 15th in spite of her busy senior schedule. Models poured out of the white stretch limo that pulled up onto the basketball court. This was a great way to launch prom this year. Prom tickets go on sale this week for $40.00 which includes dinner at the Redlands country club on May 15.

Derik, Kyle and Rafa at the San Gabriel Mission

The fourth of the California missions, San Gabriel Arcángel, had three sites. The place proposed originally was well inland from the ocean on the river now called Santa Ana. After arriving there, the founders decided to look for a better location. Moving overland, they crossed the San Gabriel River, and on September 8, 1771, founded the mission near the present city of Montebello. Five years later they had found an even better site five miles closer to the mountains, and moved the mission to its present location in 1776. On that fertile plain San Gabriel became the wealthiest of all the early missions. Construction of the buildings seen today began in 1796.

Dear Friends and Families of the Grove School ,

Since September, the Parent Teacher Group (PTG) has been working hard to host community events and raise funds for our school. The educational goals of our school are comparable to the learning environment you would find at a private school, but without the high tuition cost. However, because public funds to Charter schools are far less than those given to traditional schools, we need your help to adequately support the implementation of Montessori philosophy and the realization of our goals for our children. Our Annual Giving Campaign is one of the ways in which we raise money to support our school. So far this year, Annual Giving has received support from just 23% of our families. Our goal is to achieve 100% participation and every donation, no matter the amount, helps us achieve this.

Every penny you give goes directly to programs that support our students and school. So far this year, with PTG funds we have…

· formed STAR, a new parent group to support the arts at our school.

· launched an instrumental music program. Beginning Band class started in January. Expect to hear more from us!

· purchased new science laboratory equipment and AP textbooks to support our High School students.

· supported the re-location of the Barton School house, which now rests on our campus. PTG funds continue to assist with the costs of renovating this historic structure.

· purchased two professional new barbeques to serve us all on our work days, family events, cooking classes, school events and fund raisers.

· provided scholarships for study trips to our families who need them, thereby increasing participation to nearly 100%.

· purchased artist materials for the studio art curriculum.

We’ve proven that together we can accomplish great things and continue to grow and develop this wonderful school. We can continue to do so with your support. Please consider pledging now. To those who have already pledged, THANK YOU for your gifts and support. If you can make an additional gift at this time, we’d appreciate that also!

The Grove School held its lottery on March 18, at 7pm. It is exciting to see so many new students begin The Grove School next school year.

We look forward to seeing the 43 new students that were accepted next year! We have many exciting things planned so it will be an OUTSTANDING school year!

Once a thorough search of the campus revealed that the student was indeed missing, the student’s parents and Redlands PD were contacted. I am sure you will all be relieved to hear that the student returned to school, unharmed a couple hours later and was released to her parents care.

REDLANDS - A building more than a century old got a face-lift Saturday morning.

Members of the Redlands Conservancy, Grove School and community came together for a construction work day at the Barton Schoolhouse. They worked on the building's foundation, exterior, and interior.

"Basically, this is just a good old work day," said conservancy member Liz Beguelin, who has led the effort to save the 1902 schoolhouse.

The schoolhouse was moved to its current location at the Grove farm campus on Iowa Street in September and was set on its new foundation in January.

"Grove was looking for a multi-functional building and this was right down the street so it was an easy move," said conservancy president Bob Clark.

Saturday was the first major workday and will make it possible for Grove students to do work on the house in the coming months.

"The students can't work on it until we remove all the lead-based and hazardous materials," said Sherli Leonard, executive director of the Redlands Conservancy.

Volunteers wearing masks, booties, gloves, glasses, and white suits scraped lead-based paint from the exterior of the house and power washed it. Others cleared debris from the inside of the school, including electrical conduit, wires, excess nails, and other items.

One group removed windows and salvaged what they could of building materials. Another worked on the foundation to replace nails, and rotten or termite-infested wood.

Thanks to their work, students from the Grove School can now help restore the schoolhouse that will eventually serve as part of their school and a community events center.

The Grove School will use the building for student instruction and plans to put in a kitchen where students can prepare slow food meals using produce grown in their garden.

The 2,400-square-foot Barton Schoolhouse will also serve as a public events center. Leonard hopes it will be the start of Heritage Park.

"For the community, it could be a start of Heritage Park," Leonard said. "This whole land is city-owned and designated for the future Heritage Park. This could be the impetus that gets it started."

The Grove School has adopted the restoration project because they believe historical knowledge helps students understand their place in the world, said Grove head of school Gena Engelfried. The Barton Schoolhouse is the city's only remaining one-room schoolhouse, Leonard said.

"It's part of Redlands," Clark said. "It's the history. This was one of the first school houses in the city. It's got a certain charm to it."

In addition to helping students restore the building, the conservancy is also raising funds.

"One of our missions is to restore and restore older buildings in the city of Redlands, so this is right down our line," Clark said.

If fundraising efforts are successful, those involved think the building can be finished soon.

"I'd love to have it up and going for next school year," said conservancy and Grove School board member Margie Armantrout. "That seems ambitious but we're going to hustle, now that we're on track and have it on its foundation."

1. Time Allotments and Procedures for Public Speakers

Parent Education Night and National Honor Society Induction

Need money for college? Come to the next Parent Education Night for tips on financial aid, grants and scholarships. If you are the parent of a graduating senior and you have not filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you should do so now! The application can be found online at

www.fafsa.ed.gov

Some scholarship that require the FAFSA have deadlines as early as the beginning of February. We will also be inducting our National Honor Society members at this meeting. A number of guest speakers will be presenting important tips and information, too.

You owe it to yourself and your college-bound student to attend.

Denny's Fundraiser- After the Play; All Weekend!

Our own Redlands Denny's Restaurant has graciously agreed to donate to our school a percentage of all purchases made by Grove families on Saturday, January 16th and Sunday, January 17th. You must present an official flyer when ordering for our school to get credit for your purchases. Flyers will be available at the play or during ticket sales times. Join the cast, crew and their families at Denny's for the after-play party and all weekend to support The Grove School arts programs.

Students The Grove School Students are committed to provide at least 30 hours of community service every school year. Service hours for each school year must be completed and turned in to the school office before the end of May of each school year. Hours may be started in the summer months and applied to the upcoming school year (September-May).

Because of the holiday break, the last chance to order Great Lakes scrip for delivery before Christmas is Friday, December 11th. Orders received by 6 p.m. on Friday will be available for pick up on Friday, December 18th.
